Do you have to be Indian or South Asian to join or attend ISA events?

No. ISA's major events are open invitations for all Berkeley students. The Garba page explicitly states the event is open to "any Cal student eager to immerse themselves in the spirit of this lively folk dance," and Onam 2023 noted that "whether you are familiar with this festival or not, all are welcome."

What is the General Membership Program and what does it include?

It is a paid membership tier that gives access to exclusive social events and activities, discounts and ticket presales for major events, and access to a virtual member forum. Membership registration opens in the fall semester.

What kinds of performances happen at ISA events?

Accepted Answer

ISA events feature UC Berkeley's own South Asian performance groups. Past Diwali shows have included UCB Azaad, Cal Bhangra, and Laya of Berkeley. Garba events feature a performance by Raas Ramzat, and Onam events have included Carnatic music from Laya of Berkeley.

Does ISA collaborate with other organizations?

Yes. The annual Garba event is a collaboration with Indus (billed as "ISA x Indus Garba"), and the Onam celebration is co-hosted with the South Indian Society (SIS).

Is there an application to join ISA's leadership or organizing team?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There is a separate application process for joining the organization beyond general membership. Applications for the 2024-2025 year were due September 20th at 11:59pm.
