Do I need to play or sing classical Indian music to join?

The club's primary focus is Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, but members also perform fusions with Western and other styles. Applicants go through an application and audition process in front of the recruitment team, who vote on acceptance based on current availability.

What happens after you're accepted?

Accepted members join a subgroup led by a Subgroup Director, rehearse together, and are expected to participate in group performances and events. Membership continues until graduation as long as you attend at least 2/3 of semester meetings and stay active in a subgroup.

Does Laya perform outside of its own events?

Yes. Laya takes gigs of many kinds and has performed at campus events like Suits and Saris and Dosas and Mimosas. If you want to hire them or perform with them, there is a contact form on the website.

Does Laya bring in outside artists?

Yes. The club hosts professional musicians for lectures and concerts open to the campus community. Past hosted events include lecture demonstrations and concerts by guest artists.

What instruments and vocal traditions are represented?

Current and past members have focused on Carnatic violin, Carnatic vocal, and Hindustani vocal. The club is comprised of both vocalists and instrumentalists.
