The Consulting Committee develops machine learning and analytics projects for large companies with well-established data infrastructure. The Social Good Committee works flexibly with nonprofits and NGOs, whether that means delivering analytics or building up data infrastructure from scratch.

How is the DSS DeCal different from Data 8 or Data 100?

Data 8 and Data 100 provide a foundation in technical data science concepts. The DSS DeCal supplements Berkeley's curriculum by challenging students to collaboratively brainstorm their own original project ideas and learn the practical steps needed to see a project through to completion.

No. DSS programs cater to all experience levels: beginners can learn data science tools in the DeCal, while the Consulting and Social Good Committees offer hands-on machine learning and analytics projects for more experienced members. The Academic Development Committee also offers opportunities to lead workshops and mentor students.

Yes. DSS is one of the pioneers of the data science major at UC Berkeley, having helped run pilot versions of DATA C8 and DATA C100, two of the major's most popular courses.

Yes. All external events are free and open to all. DSS also hosts the annual Datathon for Social Good, which is open to everyone including non-UC Berkeley students.
