No. CS KickStart is open to incoming freshmen of any major, and no prior programming experience is required.

Yes. The Discovery track is for students new to programming, while the Preparatory track is for those with some background and focuses on material from early CS 61A.

What does the week actually look like?

A typical week includes Python, data science, and web development labs, seminars in your chosen track, industry panels with engineers and founders, social activities like movie night and hiking, field trips to Silicon Valley companies, and a final project presented to your cohort.

Is there a cost to participate?

No. The entire program, including housing and meals, is free for all participants. It is funded by corporate sponsors.

Has the program had lasting impact on gender diversity in CS at Berkeley?

From 2011 to 2013, the program helped double the number of women CS majors at Berkeley. In 2016, the University of Michigan launched a similar program inspired by CS KickStart.
