Who can join BJESL, and what roles exist for members?

BJESL has three membership tiers: Staff (general membership), the Editorial Board, and the Executive Board. All members are encouraged to take an active role in decision-making and policymaking.

What kinds of legal topics does the journal cover?

BJESL covers a wide range: copyright, trademark, art, sports, music, film and television, communications and broadcast media, First Amendment, rights to privacy, antitrust and unfair competition, and contracts, among others.

Was BJESL the first of its kind at Berkeley Law?

Yes. Founded in 2011 by a small group of first-year students, BJESL was the first law journal at UC Berkeley School of Law to launch on an entirely electronic platform. It later became the thirteenth official law journal of Berkeley Law.

Can people outside Berkeley Law submit articles for publication?

Yes. BJESL accepts submissions from anyone who is not a current law student at the time of submission, including professors and practitioners. Submissions must be unpublished and should be sent through Scholastica or via email.

How does the article selection process work?

Accepted Answer

Each piece is first reviewed and ranked individually by Editors, then the Publishing Committee discusses and votes as a group on which articles to include in the upcoming volume. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis until the issue is filled.
