Is AKA open to students of any background, or only African American women?

Accepted Answer

AKA was founded by African American women and its history and mission are rooted in that legacy. Membership is open to college women; the sorority's scholarship arm, AKA EAF, explicitly awards scholarships to students without regard to sex, race, creed, color, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.

What is the difference between an undergraduate chapter and a graduate chapter?

Undergraduate chapters are based on college campuses and focus on campus engagement, leadership development, and service programs. Graduate chapters are community-based and made up of members who have already completed their undergraduate experience. AKA has more than 1,122 total graduate and undergraduate chapters worldwide.

Can non-AKA members apply for scholarships through the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AKA EAF awards scholarships, fellowships, and community grants to students and organizations of all backgrounds. You do not need to be an AKA member to apply. Merit and need-based scholarships are available to full-time sophomore-and-beyond undergrads and graduate students at accredited institutions.

What is the signature program for the 2026-2030 administration?

The current administration's signature program is called AKA Foster the Future: From Here to Hope, developed under President Charletta Wilson Jacks' theme of Championing Service. Empowering Sisterhood. Transforming the World. Chapters are expected to implement activities aligned with eight international target areas including education, health, and economic empowerment.

Does AKA have its own financial institution?

Yes. The For Members Only (FMO) Federal Credit Union is sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha and is described as the first Black-owned, woman-led, sorority-based digital banking institution in U.S. history. It is available to AKA members, their families, chapter staff, and affiliated organizations, and is federally insured by the NCUA.
