Brain Exercise Initiative is a student-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit that sends volunteers to senior homes near campus to do 30-minute brain exercise sessions with Alzheimer's and dementia patients. Sessions involve simple math, writing, and reading aloud, based on the research of neuroscientist Dr. Ryuta Kawashima. Members volunteer both in person at Southside and Northside retirement homes and virtually via Zoom, building ongoing relationships with seniors while contributing to an intergenerational program active at 80+ chapters nationwide.
