BioEHS honors undergraduate bioengineering students at UC Berkeley who have maintained excellent scholarship. Members join one of five committees: Academic, Outreach, Projects, Professional Development, or Consulting. Day-to-day life includes weekly committee meetings, alumni panels, professor coffee chats, hands-on hardware/software projects, and community outreach. The society also runs BioEHSC, an annual high school bioengineering design competition, and a student-taught DeCal course. Many events are open to non-members.
ApplicationsEmails from the UC Berkeley Bioengineering department regarding admission will be sent to eligible candidates at the start of each semester.

Events They Host
BioEHSC (BioEngineering High School Competition)
Annual spring competition for high school students. Teams of 4-5 spend seven weeks designing a bioengineering solution to a biology or medicine problem, then present at a final research symposium judged by faculty, graduate students, and industry professionals. Final symposium for 2026 is April 4th.
BioE Day
On-campus event for high school students, especially those from underrepresented communities. Includes hands-on bioengineering activities, lab tours, and demos. 2025 date: Saturday, December 6th, 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM. Lunch provided.
Bridge to Bioengineering
Free 8-week online course for high school students introducing them to bioengineering through weekly lectures on Tuesday evenings (7:30-8:30 PM), plus office hours and interactive activities. No prior experience required.
Breaking Down BioE (BioE 98 DeCal)
Student-facilitated DeCal course exploring bioengineering concentrations through speaker series, journal clubs, and hands-on projects. Open to students intending to major in BioE, undecided students, and students in other majors. Instructor: Professor Dorian Liepmann.
Cross Committee Conference
End-of-semester showcase where the Projects Committee presents and demonstrates final projects.
Industry Info-Sessions
Past info-sessions hosted for organizations including Teach for America, Keck Graduate Institute, Abbott, Verily, Life Technologies, and Illumina.
Alumni Panels
Panels co-hosted by the Academic and Professional Development committees featuring BioEHS alumni and bioengineering professionals.
Member Experiences
Candidate Welcome Night (CWN)
Event where new candidates meet each other and current members through a series of activities.
Candidate Retreat
Retreat for candidates to get to know each other through activities.
Banquet
End-of-semester celebration for officers, members, candidates, and faculty.
General Meetings
Recurring meetings that frequently feature professional speakers. Candidates are required to attend at least 3 per semester.
Tips and Chips
Relaxed drop-in session where members can chat with upperclassmen about academics, research, professors, and time management. Snacks provided.
Professor Coffee Chats
Small-group informal meetings with BioE department professors, organized by the Academic Committee.
Networking Events and Mixers
Professional networking events and mixers connecting members with BioEHS alumni and industry professionals, organized by the Pro-Dev Committee.
