Do I need any taiko or musical experience to try out?

No prior taiko experience is needed, and members come from a wide range of musical backgrounds. Tryouts are designed to build skills from the ground up. As one current member puts it: 'I have no musical background so if I can do it, you can too!'

When are tryouts and what does the process look like?

Tryouts are held once a year at the beginning of Fall semester. The four-week process is split into two 2-week phases following the regular practice schedule (Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-9pm). The pool is narrowed after phase one, and acceptances are determined after phase two.

What is the time commitment once I join?

Practices are held three times a week: Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-9pm and Saturdays 8am-12pm. Members also participate in on- and off-campus performances, with performance requests varying month to month.

What if I miss Fall tryouts, is there another way to get involved?

If you can't try out in the Fall, Cal Raijin runs a 2-unit DeCal every Spring semester called 'The Art of Taiko Drumming,' taught by club members. It covers hands-on playing technique as well as the history and cultural significance of taiko, and is open to all with no prior experience required.

Does the club perform only original music?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Cal Raijin Taiko's repertoire consists entirely of original compositions written by its own members. Over the years, members have composed more than a dozen unique songs, and new pieces are featured at each annual showcase.
