CalSol is a solar vehicle team, founded in 1990, that designs, builds, tests, and races fully solar-powered cars at national and international competitions. Members work across subteams covering mechanical, electrical, battery, solar, strategy, and business. Day-to-day work includes 3D CAD modeling, carbon fiber fabrication, PCB design, battery pack management, and sponsor relations. The team bonds closely over multi-year build cycles and competes at events like the Formula Sun Grand Prix and American Solar Challenge.

Events They Host
Formula Sun Grand Prix
A 3-day race on the only Formula One track in the United States, testing vehicle dynamics and performance. CalSol has placed 1st (2017), 2nd (2019), and 5th (2021) in recent appearances.
American Solar Challenge
A 7-day race across America with varying weather and terrain conditions. CalSol completed the 2018 race entirely under solar power and competed in 2022.
Bridgestone World Solar Challenge
A 6-day race across Australia from Darwin to Adelaide. CalSol competed in the 2019 event with their Tachyon vehicle.
Cal Day
CalSol demonstrates their solar vehicle on campus during Cal Day, Berkeley's open house event for prospective students and the public.
Maker Faire
CalSol presents their vehicle and mission at Maker Faire as part of their outreach efforts.
